Chapter 10: Objects In Mirror Are More Dangerous Than They Appear

I was supposed to be out of sight, out of mind. Anyone looking for me would think I was on maternity leave, spending the time with my newborns and definitely not up to anything nefarious. The last thing we wanted was for someone to realize that I wasn’t, to see me out doing something related to the mission at hand and to draw conclusions about that.

Which of course, meant that I was out driving a delivery van in Hanet’s capital city.

“Someone is following us,” Lars Torgersen grumbled.

“No one should be following us,” I assured him. “No one knows we are here.” We had a delivery van with tinted windows to make it harder for anyone to see or recognize us.

He gave me a sour look. “You shouldn’t be here.”

I used the fact that I was driving to avoid looking at him, hoping he wouldn’t see my guilty expression. “Look, we have been over this. We are short on personnel, there’s only so many people available, we had to get this delivery today.” We had received word that the small-scale fabricator was available and we needed it for this mission. We had teams out all over the planet picking up different deliveries and shipments from various distributors, trying to hide what we were planning by acquiring everything we needed in small lots. It meant, when the opportunity came up, we had no one else available.

“Someone else could have picked up the fabricator,” Torgersen grumbled.

“Who?” I did shoot him a look this time. “We’ve been filtering in all of the personnel up to space, a few at a time. We have almost none of them down here. The handful we still have down here on the ground are already out getting other deliveries of weapons and equipment.”

Torgersen nodded, “Fine, then we should have had your security team with us.”

“That would have drawn more attention,” I protested. In truth, I was actually relieved to be out and about without a full security detail. Besides, driving the relatively boring delivery van, there was nothing to connect us to the Centurions at all.

“I wish we could have just had this one delivered,” Lars Torgersen shot me a look, “you are certain this is the one we need?”

I nodded, “I read over the specifications, it can do the precision manufacturing work we want. The suit modifications are going to need a lot of tiny, precise components. This is exactly what we need.”

“That’s what bothers me,” Torgersen growled. It sounded as if he were trying to suggest this was a trap.

“This isn’t a trap,” I insisted. “Someone would have to know what we were doing for this to be a trap. If someone knew, they’d take that to the Guard and then we would just be done.”

“Not necessarily,” Lars Torgersen shot another look in the mirrors. “Look, it doesn’t take a genius to know that the Centurions are prepping to return to Century. A small fabricator like this would be useful to the Centurions regardless of the circumstances.
